Search Tips For Finding a Book
1. Books are organized according to the Dewey Decimal System. To find a book, you need to know the Call Number of the book by looking in Destiny.
2. The sections in the your library include: Fiction, Non-Fiction, Hawaiian, Biography and Reference. You can tell which section the book is located by the Call Number.
Examples:
H 398.2 C = "H" stands for Hawaiian section
R 299.9 MEL = "R" stands for Reference section
B Washington = "B" stands for Biography section
3. You can also search by typing in the title and then clicking on the Title icon. Do the same if you know the author. Or you can type in the subject and click on Subject or Keyword icon.
Search Tips for Finding an AR Book (if you don't know a title or author)
1. Go to the LHS OPAC (library computers or on our website under Information Sources)
2. Click on the AR icon (red book)
3. Type in your lowest reading level allowed. You can get a broader search if you search for 2 levels above that number (click on "1" and use pull down menu)
4. Click on find to bring up the list of AR books available in your library. NOTE: LHS Library could not afford to buy all the books on the school's AR list. You can always get the AR book from other sources - public library, post library, your home or from a friend. Just check to make sure the school owns the test.
5. Once the list is shown, you can click on the headings - Title, Author, Reading Level, Point Value, Call Number to arrange the titles by those headings.
Search Tips To Find Information on our LHS Databases or Internet
1. The most important search tip is to know what you are looking for before you sit down to search for information. Look at the assignment sheet given by your teacher. Ask questions if you are not sure what you need to do. This is Step 2 of the Research Process.
2. On the LHS library computers, you are given a choice of information sources (databases). Eliminate the sources that you will NOT use for your research. This will help you focus on the databases that will most likely have the information you need, and you will not waste your time in places that will have little information. Once you find the information you need, decide if you are going to take notes from the screen, print the information or download.
3. If you search the Internet, check for the accuracy of the information. There are many sites on the Internet that give inaccurate information. Look for clues that might validate the accuracy of the information. For example, the web address of the site may tell you who is the author of the site:
www.name.gov = government agency
www.name.edu = educational institution
www.name.org = organization (usually non-profit)
www.name.com = commercial business
Of course, there are always exceptions to the rule, so be careful. For more information on how to determine whether or not a website is authentic, see Evaluating website.
